The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Stark County currently administers two scholarships. The Alumni Scholars Scholarship and our Stark County Endowed Scholarship

The Alumni Scholars Scholarship
The Alumni Scholars Program is an official program of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Inc., and the admissions office of The Ohio State University. The university grants one $600 scholarship for each 2000 alumni living in the county. At this time, Stark County has roughly 4,300 alumni and receives two alumni scholars scholarships. The club has the opportunity, through various fund raising activities, to increase these scholarships to whatever level we may reach for the year. Recent scholarships have been $1,400 - $1,700 each.

The scholarships are strictly merit based, and are available to seniors graduating from Stark County high schools who plan to attend The Ohio State University. These scholarships are one time, non-renewable scholarships for entering freshmen only.

Applications for this scholarship are delivered to the Guidance Office in each high school in the county in mid-September to early October. Different schools choose to advertise these scholarships in different ways. A poster is included with the applications, but some schools choose not to display the poster. Interested students should check with the guidance office and specifically request information on Ohio State and on the Alumni Scholars Scholarship.

All applications must be returned to our scholarship chairperson (whose name and address will be listed on the application) no later than January 15. Note that the guidance counselor must complete a portion of the application, so leave enough time for him/her to do so. The applications will be reviewed, and the top ten candidates will be interviewed sometime in February.

The Stark County Alumni Club is required to provide a ranked listing of all interviewed candidates to the Office of Student Financial Aid at Ohio State no later than March 1. While they generally accept our recommendations, there have been occasions where our top choice(s) have received a full scholarship from another source or have chosen to attend another university, or have chosen for some other reason to decline the scholarship. For these, and other reasons, we cannot notify our recipients until the Financial Aid Office has determined that the student will be attending Ohio State, and that the student is eligible for additional aid from our scholarship. This process may take until April or May.

We always ask that the university confirm our scholarship winners prior to our annual club business meeting held in May. Our winners will be invited to attend the event so that they can be greeted by our local alumni.

Stark County Endowed Scholarship
The Stark County Endowed Scholarship is granted annually to outstanding Stark County high school seniors who will be attending The Ohio State University. The program is strictly merit based, and is coupled with the Alumni Scholars Program scholarship. The amount of this scholarship will vary year-to-year, as it depends on the current value and yield of an endowment fund at the university. Our club has donated a sum of money to this fund, and the university distributes a portion of the annual return as our scholarship. We are always actively seeking additional funds to build this fund to the point of offering a full year's tuition, but we are not there at present. We are also seeking donations from well positioned alumni in the area to additional named endowments which will be administered along with our existing scholarships. The amount of the scholarship(s) is made known to us, generally sometime in June.

We use the same application form as the Alumni Scholars program, with the same base of students and deadlines. One application will make the candidate eligible for all scholarships administered by the Stark County Alumni Club.

For more information on our scholarships, or on making donations to our scholarship funds, e-mail or phone our Student Recruitment Chairperson, Carol Kinsey at cskinsey@aol.com, 330.879.2417.
